Frequently Asked Questions
Each session is 60 minutes.
Students attend sessions once or sometimes twice a week. Sessions run on the same calendar as the school year, with four, 9-week terms.
Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory approach to language and numeracy instruction involving all pathways of learning – auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic/tactile.
Sessions are tailor-made to the individual student and, therefore, structured to the needs of that child.
This depends on the individual student. There is no set program that a student works through and is then finished. Orton-Gillingham is a methodology of teaching that works as quickly or as slowly as a student needs to work. Generally, students remain for one or more years.
Although Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory approach that works well for all children, it is unrealistic to expect one session of information a week to be retained by a child. Sessions must be reinforced at home with reading and writing/numeracy exercises.
All sessions for each term require payment. If you are unable to attend a session, this will not carry over to the next term or be reimbursed. We believe it is important for students to attend weekly sessions regularly. Makeup sessions will be provided for absences due to school excursions, school camps, and illness.
Depending on availability, sessions are sometimes offered over the school holidays as intensive sessions, i.e., daily sessions for a week.
The Orton-Gillingham Academy has been awarded International Dyslexia Association (IDA) recognition as a training program that produces educators who have engaged in intensive training and mastered the practices of structured literacy to help prevent reading failure.
